The Story of Notting Dale

The Story of Notting Dale: From Potteries and Piggeries to Present Times
by Shaaron Whetlor

Notting Dale's history begins with stories of the pig-keepers, gypsies and laundry women who struggled to make a living in this extremely poor part of North Kensington. The book tells of the conditions of homes and work places and of the missions, churches, clubs and housing associations set up to try and remedy the situation. It brings the story up to date with accounts of bombing in the Second World War, post war planning blight and redevelopment of the area's housing. It covers the arrival of many incoming peoples, describing the prejudice and riots encountered by the Caribbean community in the 1950s, the setting up of voluntary organisations in response and the beginnings of Carnival. It concludes with accounts from people who have arrived more recently from Spain and Morocco. Generously illustrated with maps and archive and personal photos, the book provides excellent background for projects on Notting Dale.
